Colorado’s Fastest-Growing Communities (from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs)
Following the mortgage crises of 2008, some cities in Colorado are experiencing more and faster growth than others. Westword published Nerdwallet’s list of the fastest growing communities in our state. Here is a look at the top ten:
10. Fort Collins – Home of Colorado State University, this community showed growth in several important areas from 2009-2012, including a 7% growth in the population of working age residents, and a 7.5% increase in median income growth.
9. Aurora – Colorado’s third largest city’s median income grew 11.5% from 2009-2012 and working age population grew 5.5% of the same period.
8. Littleton – This Denver suburb’s median income grew to just over $50,000 from 2009-2012, an impressive 12.4% rate, while its population climbed just 1.8%.
7. Castle Rock – This community makes the list mainly for its significant growth in population. Working age residents increased 13.4% in just the years from 2009-2012.
6. Wheat Ridge – Growth in the healthcare industry has been partly responsible for the amazing growth of median income in this community. It saw a jump of 17% from 2009-2012 while working age population grew 4.6%.
5. Denver – Both income and working age population is growing in the state’s largest city, with median income rising 14.3% and population growth at 5.8% in the 2009-2012 period.
4. Northglenn – With a working age population growing at 7.3% from 2009-2012 and a median income growth of 13.6%, this community makes NerdWallet’s list at number 4.
3. Columbine – From 2009-2012, median income grew to over $62,000, an increase of 15.8%. This combined with a population growth rate of working age residents of 7.3% puts it third on the list.
2. Security-Widefield – Just 10 miles from Colorado Springs, this area saw a rapid 16.1% growth in working age population from 2009-2012. Median income grew at a similar 14.3% placing it second on the list.
1. Fountain – Also close to Colorado Springs, Fountain’s median income grew an impressive 17.2% from 2009-2012 while working age population increased 8.7%.
