In 1877 after the Colorado Central Railroad was built, the city was established near the crossing of the Big Thompson River. Named after the railroad’s president, William A. H. Loveland, the little farming community primarily produced sugar beets and sour cherries. Spring Glade orchard actually became the largest cherry orchard west of the Mississippi River.
In the late 20th century, Hewlett-Packard, Teledyne, and Hach built manufacturing facilities near Loveland. More jobs came when the University of Colorado Hospital built several centers in the area.
