Outdoor Home Maintenance To Do Before Winter

We welcome fall along the Front Range! Hoodie weather, warm drinks, and preparing for winter. When it comes to your home, a few smart moves now can save you from major stress when snow shows up:
1. Keep Mowing
Yup, even in fall. If your grass is still growing, don’t stop. Keep cutting it until the days stay cool (50s) and nights dip into the 40s. Then it’s nap time for the lawn.
2. Rake the Leaves
Big piles are fun for dogs and kids, but bad for the grass. Wet leaves smother your lawn, block sunlight, and invite mold. Rake them up while they’re dry. You’ll breathe easier in spring.
3. Aerate the Lawn
Grab a tool (or hire someone) and punch holes in the grass. Sounds odd, but it lets air, water, and nutrients sink deep. Healthier roots = stronger lawn next year.
4. Clean & Store Garden Tools
Wipe off dirt, oil them if needed, and stash them in a dry spot. Power tools? Keep them off the ground so they don’t rust. Trust us, Future You doesn’t want to buy a new weed whacker in April.
5. Bring Fragile Plants Inside
Don’t let the frost kill your favorites. Move delicate plants to a porch or indoors. Check for bugs before they hitch a ride in.
6. Check Roof & Gutters
Loose shingles? Clogged gutters? Handle it now, not during a storm. Hire help if you’re not comfy on a ladder.
7. Cover or Store Furniture
Snow doesn’t care that your patio set is “weather-resistant.” Cover it or move it inside.
8. Seal Entry Points
Tiny holes = mouse hotels. Use plywood, mesh, or cement. Don’t invite problems.
9. Shut Off Outdoor Faucets
Drain the lines and turn them off. Frozen pipes are expensive.
10. Protect Your Fence
Seal wood. Paint metal. Done.
11. Trim Trees
Dead branches can fall. Cut ‘em now before winter makes that choice for you.
