HISTORY
In 1864 Colorado offered the Homestead Act, which attracted people who desired gold and land to settle. Near Castle Rock valuable rhyolite stone was discovered in a butte. Miners nicknamed it “the Rock” and established a tiny community of shacks. In 1874 one of the original homesteaders, Jeremiah Gould, donated 120 acres of his land to the community which was officially named Castle Rock. Soon six streets (Elbert, Jerry, Wilcox, Perry, Castle and Front) and the Courthouse Square were designated. A train depot was built for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. The town’s economy steadily grew from that point as ranchers and stone producers could easily receive supplies and ship their product.
The old depot has been preserved and transformed into the Castle Rock Historical Museum on Elbert Street, where you can learn more about the town’s beginning.
