Newest Decorating Style; Less style more “feeling”

COZY has become fashionable!  Embodied by the Danish word hygge (pronounce that hoo gah) this is the “warm fuzzies” of home décor.  Not so hard to achieve, but almost impossible to describe.

First hitting BIG on the east coast and moving west, (like our pioneer ancestors), hygge is a design ideal that creates an enveloping sense of cozy in your home.

Illustrated, it looks like a nicely appointed room, but with added warmth such as throw blankets and soft materials.  Yet that doesn’t really capture the true sense of the atmosphere being created.

Unlike the design concepts easily translated by words, like Country, Urban, Farmhouse – hygge is about creating a specific sense of nourishing happiness.  Kind of like being wrapped in loveliness while sharing space with an innate sense of being warm and cared for.

Think candles, soft cuddly textures, a favorite pair of pj’s and simplicity all curled up together in front of a roaring fire.

As difficult as it is to identify with a few words or even illustrate with pictures, it’s one of those design concepts that, once you do get a feel for it or of it, you’ll definitely understand and know it!

The ideal of hygge is to surround yourself with soft, soothing materials that cradle and snuggle you as you sink gratefully into them.  Hunkering down, being cherished for your very existence, wrapped about by furnishings that receive you rather than just holds you off the floor.

Soothing, quieting, comforting, sense of well-being, accepted, cared for, coddled.  These are just some of the words that spring to mind to describe this decorating style.  Like many, it is really more of a lifestyle being embraced than simply a decorating trend.

Blazing warmth, cozy is making its comforting mark on our hearts, homes and hearths.
