How to Make a Smart Move!
There is no doubt about, people in general don’t like to move. The job is stressful, physically taxing and potential dangerous, which is why a large number of people opt not to move themselves but to hire a moving company to facilitate the process. Depending on several circumstances, the task of transporting an entire home’s contents to a new location can be very expensive. Even though the expense is hard to justify at times, this is one area where you do not want to cut corners or take a chance by not researching enough potential companies. So if you are looking for a quality moving company and are uncertain where to start, here several do’s and don’ts to consider before contracting with a company.
- Get at least 3 quotes from moving companies.
- Try including one quote from a “big name” company to use as a point of reference.
- Check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure the companies get quotes from are in good standing.
- Don’t be afraid to look at Craigslist or in the classifieds for moving help.
- Go to safersys.org to check to make sure they are licensed and insured.
- Get at least one reference from each company.
- Get all quotes in person and in writing.
- Have your final quote highlighted or circled by the company, so it is clearly spelled out.
- Consider buying additional insurance for long distance moves.
- Make sure you understand the terms of your contract, especially pertaining to damage, theft, additional charges and cancellations.
- Make sure to call and confirm the day before the move.
- Organize your boxes and belonging so the move can go efficiently, especially if you are paying by the hour.
- Inform the movers of fragile or sensitive items.
- Take your own inventory and require a written copy from the movers.
- Remember to stay out of the mover’s way and remember you don’t need to help them aside from a little direction.
