Front Range Plants That Add Instant Curb Appeal

Nicely landscaped backyard in Colorado

Boosting your curb appeal is essential. So before you plant that “For Sale” sign in your yard, consider these excellent trees, shrubs, and flowers to freshen up your front yard and curb.

Shrubs

This is an excellent solution when your front yard could use a little privacy. Breeds like privet, arborvitae, and viburnum respond well to a formal, sheared look. Lilac, dogwood, or juniper shrubs will achieve a more natural look. And, of course, evergreens and boxwood make a wonderful year-round screening.

Roses

Notoriously known for being fussy, selecting the right type will save you a lot of time and energy normally devoted to pruning. The low-maintenance Knock Out family produces spectacular flowers from spring until frost.

Hydrangeas

These elegant flowers are easy to grow and maintain and put on one of the best shows across the Front Range. Endless Summer, Late Panicle, Pee Gee, Limelight, and Annabelle do well in our climate.

Hostas

Tuck some of these plants into the bare spots under your trees. While they love the shade, they’ll still produce some small flowers. But their leaves are beautiful and come in shades of green, blue, gray, and even cream and yellow-gold.

Annuals

Of course, they make the list! What inexpensive, easy, yet effective fillers for your landscape. You can even pop them into containers, hanging baskets, or window boxes for a quick splash of color. The best varieties for the Front Range are geranium, Salvia, Marigold, Petunia, Snapdragon, Impatiens, Zinc, and Coleus.

Portulacas

When you fill matching containers with these heat and drought-tolerant plants, you’ll save a chunk of time or money. Also known as purslane, sun and moss roses, portulacas are nearly carefree annuals blooming vigorously under the Colorado sun.

Daylilies

If your landscaping could use more color, these cheerful little flowers are your answer. Planted in masses, they are tough perennials that tolerate heat and drought and are resilient against pests and diseases.

Peonies

Another species with brilliant colors and giant flowers, peonies bloom from spring into early summer. These Colorado favorites don’t need much care and love our sunny weather. They can grow three to four feet tall and display round, lustrous, dark green foliage. In autumn, the foliage takes on a lovely yellow or reddish-maroon color.

Ornamental Grasses

Do you prefer a more modern look? Easy-to-grow ornamental grasses have an interesting texture and add movement as they sway in the breeze. Big Bluestem Grass, Feather Reed Grass, Blue Grama Grass, Maiden Grass, and Fountain Grass flourish in our climate.

Caladiums

To give a more luxurious feel to buyers, your landscape’s shady spots need life. Planting caladiums is an excellent option. Even in low light, they’ll spread up to ten inches and come in varieties like cherry red, raspberry, chartreuse, violet-pink, and cream.

Ornamental Trees

Wow people right from the curb with ornamental trees like the Snowdance Japanese tree. Types with or without flowering will offer attractive fall colors: Ornamental Pears, Flowering Crabapples, golden rain Trees, Hawthorne, Tulip Trees, and Ornamental Plums.
